Turning Passion into Profession, One Nurse at a Time.
From California to New England Tech, Army Veteran Nikki Schulz Found her Passion for Nursing and the Support She Needed
“New England Tech is the college that completely prepared me for my career.” – Nikki Schulz, Nursing, ’23
Meet Army Veteran Nikki Schulz, who earned her associate degree in nursing in the Spring of 2023. An adult and transfer student with her bachelor’s in legal studies, she is originally from Stockton, CA. Nikki found her passion – and the support she needed – at New England Tech.
New England Tech Made it Easy for Nikki to Balance Work and Family Life
“When I decided to go back to college, I was worried about how I was going to juggle work and my family obligations. How would I balance work, classes, and family life with kids? New England Tech made it easier in every aspect. The transfer process was smooth. Everyone from admissions to financial aid was so helpful.”
“Quickly getting into the workforce changes everything. As a returning student, I knew 91ֱ was the answer.”
“Passion is something that stands out about this college. 91ֱ professors are passionate – not only about what they are teaching but also watching students excel and thrive.”
Nikki believes New England Tech made it easy for her to get and stay motivated. “I could balance a family and get my degree at an accelerated pace, in about 18 months. Quickly getting into the workforce changes everything. As a returning student, I knew 91ֱ was the answer.”
Nursing Clinicals Prepared Nikki for Success from Day One
“I’ve never seen anything as advanced as our nursing SIM labs. It is one of the selling points of New England Tech.”
Nikki valued going to clinicals so early in her nursing program. “Some colleges do not offer clinicals until their final terms. But at New England Tech, from term one, nursing students start clinicals, and they immediately take what they learn and apply it in a hospital setting. That hands-on experience in simulation (SIM) labs is invaluable. I’ve never seen anything as advanced as our nursing SIM labs. It is one of the selling points of New England Tech.”
With 91ֱ’s smaller class sizes, Nikki says she received a more personalized college experience. “The nursing program itself was a draw, and so was the individualized attention from professors who were willing to help, and the networking and Career Services. These prompted me towards New England Tech for sure.”
An Emotional Commencement
Nikki was overcome with emotion as she walked across the stage during Commencement, knowing her dedication was worth it. After coming to 91ֱ, her life is different. “I’ll be making more in salary than my previous three jobs combined. New England Tech is opening doors for a better future – for me and my family.”
Nikki’s Skills Led to Job Offers
Nikki landed two positions after graduation. The first is a full-time registered nursing position at Newport Hospital on the Medical Surgical Floor. “I am glad to begin my career with an exciting new full-time position where I can consistently challenge myself.” She is also a part-time charge nurse at the Brookdale South Bay Health Center on a dementia/Alzheimer’s unit. “Last time I worked in a skilled nursing facility on a dementia/Alzheimer’s unit 15 years ago, I was a CNA; and now I am working on an identical unit as the charge nurse.”
“I’ll be making more in salary than my previous three jobs combined. New England Tech is opening doors for a better future – for me and my family.”
Nikki advises anyone who thinks they might be interested in a career-ready path to apply to New England Tech. “Those 18-months can set the destiny for the rest of your life. You’ll see how much support you have and how quickly your hard work pays off.”
