Medical laboratory technicians play a vital role behind the scenes, generating the accurate and timely results that physicians rely on to diagnose, treat, and monitor disease. Working with advanced laboratory equipment and diagnostic technologies, MLTs help ensure patients receive the right care at the right time. Graduates are prepared for careers in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, physician offices, research facilities, and other healthcare settings where laboratory testing is critical to patient outcomes.

In our program you’ll master the skills to:

  • Perform laboratory testing on blood, body fluids, and other patient specimens
  • Operate and maintain modern laboratory instruments and diagnostic equipment
  • Analyze and interpret laboratory data with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Apply quality control and quality assurance procedures
  • Follow laboratory safety protocols and regulatory standards
  • Support patient care through timely and reliable diagnostic testing

Requirements & Eligibility

  1. Participants must:

    -Be a resident of Rhode Island or working in a Rhode Island healthcare facility AND be willing to work in Rhode Island after program completion.
    -Pass our Admission requirements for the program (ACCU)

Program Cost

Applicants must fill out the FAFSA form. Eligible participants may qualify for full tuition coverage for select healthcare programs. Further details will be provided in a mandatory virtual information session.

Timeline

Program Duration: 18 months (This program starts twice a year — Fall 2026 and Winter 2027)

Program Launch: October 2026 & January 2027

Program Completion: March 2028 & June 2028

Graduates must take the Medical Laboratory Technician Examination from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Only individuals who have graduated from a NAACLS accredited medical lab technician program within an accredited institution are eligible to sit for the exam.

Career Pathways

With an AS in Medical Lab Technology, graduates are prepared for entry-level roles including:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician in hospital or clinical laboratories
  • Clinical laboratory technician in diagnostic or reference labs
  • Microbiology or chemistry laboratory assistant/technician
  • Blood bank or immunohematology laboratory technician
